A couple of major commercial projects are underway here in Newport. The new Walgreens has been under construction for quite some time, crews now pretty much finished with the structure itself; now turning their attention to getting the inside ready for the big grand opening sometime in July, we’re told. First Street will still function, except with wider asphalt driving surfaces and lots of arrows telling drivers which way to go. And a prescription drive up window.
The new Umpqua Bank is finally under construction at 13th and 101 with some minor ground work going on. Their sign says the new bank will open this fall. The old bank burned to the ground just over a year ago when an electric short in wiring to the outside-facing ATM machine erupted in flame. There were no sprinklers in the building because the bank built a new bank over the shell of an older building that was not originally required to have sprinklers. Umpqua has been operating out of a vacant bank building over on NE 11th since the fire March 12, 2012.
