Newport Police say a car that had just stopped for a pedestrian at Highway 101 at Alder was hit hard from behind by a fully loaded dump truck. The impact propelled the car forward. No injuries reported. Police said the driver of the truck was being cited. Newport fire crews were called to the scene to assist in the clean up of fluids coming from the truck.
Police say the coast is getting into the tourist season with many people walking across 101 and other major streets. They remind us all that under Oregon Law, every street corner to street corner crossing IS A LEGAL CROSSWALK, even if there is no crosswalk painted on the pavement. Vehicles MUST stop.
Word to the wise: No matter how big or small your vehicle, never follow so close that you can’t stop when traffic in front of you stops for a pedestrian.
