The Newport Community Drum Circle is starting its summer season off with the usual bang (and maybe a couple of boom whacks) this weekend with its Third Annual Nye Beach Second Saturday Summer Drum Jam on the outdoor stage in the Café Mundo Courtyard, 209 NW Coast Street, from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m.
The jam, described as “part street performance, part jam session, part neighborhood block party” features the Newport Drum Circle Ensemble with Chandler Davis and Mary-Beth Nickel (aka Thunder & Lightness Duo) along with Gus Willemin, Allen Julian, Skip Floraday, and special musical guests.
Drum circle leader Davis cautions that the event is not a drum circle: “All of our events are about audience participation, but we need to keep this one a little bit restrained out of respect for the venue and the neighborhood.” Light percussion will be available for audience members. Jammers who have some experience following a rhythm are encouraged to bring drums or other appropriate acoustic instruments, and dancers are also welcome. “I just need for folks to check in with me so we don’t have everyone up on the stage at once,” Davis said.
The event grew out of street performances in conjunction with the Nye Beach Merchants Association’s now discontinued Second Saturday Stroll event.
The community wide party is free and family friendly and all ages are welcome. Davis said there is seating in the courtyard and some of it is sheltered (the event goes on rain or shine). Outdoor food and beverage service will also be available during the jam (no purchase is required). Contact Davis at 541-272-4615 or email@example.com by email.
