Nye Beach was the place to be to see it all dressed up like some South Florida shore, with everyone down to their t-shirts, shorts and swimming suits. After several days of bone chilling wind roaring out of the north, Saturday was a real “cooker” in the Newport area.
Locals couldn’t really believe it – even the tourists thought it odd that today did not jive with their previous visits to the coast – a place where a pretty beach was delightfully cooler than Portland, Salem or Eugene.
While temperatures bounced between 89 and 91 all day in Newport, Toledo strangely enough seemed stuck at 82 according to a lot of thermometers around town. The winds were definitely out of the east so there might have been some heat compression going on as hot valley air ran up against the cooler marine air offshore, thereby running up Newport’s temperature.
Regardless, it was a magical day that filled faces with smiles and lips with cold water in copious quantities as everyone tried to stay hydrated and cool. The forecast for Sunday is pretty close to what we had today!
