Power is out in wide areas of Newport. CLPUD is enroute.
6:22pm Appears a big piece of equipment blew at substation at 8th and Grant. Big flames to twenty feet high now visible.
6:39pm Power at the substation is now off. Fire crews are going in to put the fire out. Now word yet on what caused the explosion and fire.
Guests at the Shilo Inn are trapped between floors in an elevator.
The fire has been extinguished with dry chemicals. They are now cooling the vessel with water.
Shilo guests trapped in the elevator are retrieved. No one is yet predicting when the power will come back on. Power is still on in Newport north of McDonalds.
Residents are being allowed to return to their homes.
CLPUD is re-routing power back into Newport (three feed-in points). South Beach is now back on. CLPUD’s PIO Chris Chandler says everybody should be back on very soon.
The explosion was from a huge circuit breaker that blew, sending out a shock wave that reverberated throughout the city. Chandler says they were planning to replace the break anyway due to its age. No word on how long it’ll take them to replace it. There’s some obvious fire damage in the vicinity of the failed/burned breaker.
