Newport Walking Club members Lori Mackey, Sandy Adams, Anne Walker, Janine LaFranchise gear up for the summer long Have A Heart “Walk-A-Thon” for health and to support the Newport Food Pantry & Operation Snackpacks emergency food programs.

Newport Mayor Sandra Roumagoux recently proclaimed the summer of 2013 as the summer to Have A Heart to improve the lives and health of Newport citizens by walking! There are so many benefits derived from a regular walking regimen. 30 minutes of walking per day lessens the chance of type 2 diabetes. It nourishes the brain and can counter faltering memories in people over 50. Walking reduces stress, revs up your energy, and boosts your immune system. People who walk have fewer heart attacks and strokes than couch potatoes. As a matter of fact, in one study of women, a regular walking program showed to be just as effective as vigorous exercise when it came to
heart health.

One of the best things about walking is that it’s affordable. There’s no gym membership to pay and no expensive equipment to buy. All you need is a set of comfortable clothes and a good pair of shoes.

The Newport Food Pantry & Operation Snackpacks is partnering with the Newport
Walking Club in the Newport Have-A-Heart Walking Program. This summer, people in
Newport will have an opportunity to walk all over town for their own health and fitness,
while raising money for the Newport Food Pantry & Operation Snackpacks.

Why is the Newport Food Pantry & Operation Snackpacks so interested in walking? In
today’s world when such a large part of the United States population is suffering from
obesity and related diseases, the Pantry doesn’t feel it’s enough just to feed hungry people.
They want to explore ways to address issues that affect overall health. People who are
healthy are more productive on the job. They feel better and are typically happier.
Medical costs are reduced. The whole community benefits.

And that’s why they are partnering with the Newport Walking Club in the Have-A-Heart
Walking Program. For four months, people in Newport will have an opportunity to walk
while raising money for the Newport Food Pantry & Operation Snackpacks.

With a kick-off walking event on Saturday, May 18 at the Port of Newport RV Park South
Beach Office to get us started, people are invited to join the fun with a great community
of dedicated walking enthusiasts. Get your own sponsor or let us get one for you. Walk
for one day or participate during the whole four months. Together, let’s see how far people
can walk and help us fight hunger, one step at a time. There are many ways to get
involved.
