Toledo First Weekend Art Features “It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad May” Show for May
Passport holders to collect hand-carved stamp by Becky Miller
On May 4 and 5, the arts community of Toledo will be opening galleries and studios to celebrate “It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad May” during First Weekend. This month the public will have the opportunity to collect, in the free Passport to Toledo Arts, a unique hand-carved stamp by Toledo artist, Becky Miller. A different stamp has been available each month during First Weekend for the past year; this month’s stamp is the final stamp that will be made available to collectors. More information is available online at http://www.toledoarts.info/.
First Weekend receptions at participating galleries and studios throughout Toledo will be held on Saturday and Sunday, May 4 and 5, from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm. This month’s featured artist is Becky Miller and she is interpreting the theme with a special “Mad About Bugs!” show that will include several of her own oil paintings of kelp and bugs, as well as bug-themed work in both encaustic and gourds by Caroll Loomis, fused glass beetles by Alice Haga, and photos by Nik Yost, a young photographer. Come celebrate the amazing world of insects and even taste some – Becky will have some crickets and larvae snacks for the brave (these snacks are very popular in parts of Asia ), as well as gummy bugs for the not-so-brave. The show will be open to the public from 11:00 am until 5:00 pm both days. Becky Miller Studio is located in Toledo ’s Arts District at 167 NE 1st St. For more information, call (503)504-7289 or see http://www.beckymillerartist.com./
The Yaquina River Museum of Art celebrates with Pat Klinkhammer of Newport, lucky winner of the March St. Patrick’s Day Drawing for a $3500 painting by Michael Gibbons, founder of the museum in 2002. Pat gleefully tells us she can no longer say she never wins anything! For First Weekend the Museum will continue to show an exhibit from the Permanent Collection. The feature painting this month from the collection was done by Ed Young of Philomath, Oregon and is focused on the artist’s time living in South Africa. Colors of this oil painting are vivid and the “heat” rises as a figure steps into a boat from the dock. Light refreshments will be provided by the Friends of the Museum. Museum regular hours are Wed.-Sun. noon-4 pm; it will be open from 11 to 5 each day of First Weekend. The School House (Circa 1887) Exhibit and Office space is located at 151 NE Alder Street in the Uptown Arts District. For more information, call (541) 336-1907 or email email@example.com.
Michael Gibbons has always been mad about mechanical drawing and to this day loves to spend time on technical drawings and doodlings. Look for the unusual this month as he shows some of his past mechanical drawing endeavors at his “Mad for Mechanical Drawing” show, as well as Northwest and Southwest landscape work done in the Plein Air tradition. Join Michael for conversation and a complimentary glass of wine at his Signature Gallery both days of First Weekend Toledo Art. Gallery Michael Gibbons is located at the 1926 Vicarage, 140 NE Alder Street, and will be open from 11-5 Saturday and Sunday. For more information, call (541) 336-2797 or email firstname.lastname@example.org or see http://www.michaelgibbons.net
In celebration of our beautiful and dramatic Oregon Coast, Ivan Kelly Gallery-Studio will be showcasing his award-winning coastal/marine oil paintings during first weekend art. Ivan’s work has gained the attention of International Salon 13, a prestigious international realism exhibit whose mission is seeking and promoting artistic excellence. Of the thousands of submissions from around the world, only 350 paintings were juried into the exhibit, including Toledo artist Ivan Kelly’s “Pacific Dunes,” a 12″ x 24″ oil painting. The show is hosted by Greenhouse Gallery of Fine Art in San Antonio, Texas, one of the most respected galleries in the United States. A catalog of the show may be viewed at Ivan Kelly Gallery-Studio in Toledo, which will be open during First Weekend Art.
