Another Coast Hills Classic Mountain Bike Race returns to South Beach May 5th putting competitors through a grueling hill and dale trek of straight up, straight down and slippery turns in the 12 mile course (a double run 24 miler for the experts and pros) with a 1,600 foot gain. Road courses vary from muddy to gravel and a lot of single track.
It’s really a revival of an former annual event kicked off by Newport High School teacher Dave Campbell and a number of his students, including Ben Eder. Ben and his family kept the tradition alive for a number of years until a fateful day in 2001 when Ben died in a fishing accident at the age of 21. Proceeds from the race now benefits a fund for youth sports scholarships in his name at Newport Parks and Recreation.
Major sponsors of the Coast Hills Classic include Newport Parks and Recreation, Bike Newport, Wilder Development and many others which include property owners who graciously granted permission for the race course to go through their forested property.
Registration is now open at the website: www.Active.com/mountain-biking/south-beach-or/coast-hills-classic-mountain-bike-race-2013 Registration fee is $30 until the day of the race which then makes it $40.
The excitement begins at 10am with the big line-up of competitors at the Newport Campus of Oregon Coast Community College on College Way.
