Just like raindrops, talented Oregon Coast Community College students are showing up in buckets for the first OCCC student talent show. Talent for the show so far includes a couple of singers, a rock guitarist, a band, a belly dancer, a hula hoop dancer, a flute player, a pianist and a classical guitarist, plus a couple of students who will read poems from the soon to be published OCCC literacy journal, Waves and another student who will read a short story.
The April Shower’s Student Talent and Art Show is a benefit for student success programs at OCCC, including art scholarships. Wilder, the development that made building the OCCC campus possible, is the sponsor of the event. The Wilder community was created, according to the developers, “to strike a balance between human society and nature.”
Edward Van Aelstyn, well known OCCC English and Film Arts instructor, will be the MC for the show. The college Choir lead by Dr. Mary Lee Scovel, will sing a couple of songs prior to the talent show. Prizes will be awarded to the three top “talents” chosen by a three-member judge team, with audience input. The Top Prize will be a $25 gift card from Wal-Mart, a $20 gift card to the OCCC College Store and two tickets to Coming Attractions Theaters. Second Prize will win a $25 gift card from Wal-Mart and a $10 gift card to the OCCC College Store. Third prize will win a $25 gift card to Wal-Mart. Plus, all contestants will win a pass to Ripley’s Believe It or Not.
In addition to the talent show, there will be a display of student photography. Student artwork from Julie Goos-Pence’s art classes will be available to purchase at the silent auction tables. Tours of the building, including the Aquarium Science building and the nursing skills lab, will be conducted for anyone interested in seeing more of the college.
The talent show is open and free to the public, with a suggested donation of $5.00 per person. The show also includes light refreshments including donated coffee from Dutch Brothers, pie from Pie Chalet, and chocolate covered cherries from Grand Island Confectionery. Other refreshment donations as well as prize donations are still being sought.
The April Showers event will be held on April 26 at the Central County Campus from 5:30 – 7:30 pm. More information about the Foundation is available on the college website, oregoncoastcc.org/foundation or call Ronan at 541-867-8531.
