A visibly frustrated Newport Public Works Director Tim Gross told the Newport City Council Monday night that a big new crosswalk project from downtown Newport clear out to 12th street has been delayed again due to what he called bureaucratic difficulties between ODOT and the consultants. Gross said crosswalks are not complicated to do and, in his opinion, the project should have been well underway by now. But it’s not, and with projected further delays, it’s not likely to get done in the current construction season.
In the meantime many crosswalks painted on Highway 101 from downtown out toward the north end of town have been badly faded by winter rains and heavy traffic. He said it means that drivers will have to remember – under state law – even if a crosswalk isn’t painted on the pavement at intersections, it’s STILL a legal crosswalk. And if you don’t stop or yield, you’re open to getting an expensive ticket.
