Umpqua Bank is throwing a “thank-you-for-sticking-with-us picnic” for their customers and the community March 12th
Umpqua Bank-Newport is offering a free picnic lunch for all their customers and the community who stuck with them through high winds, rain and the loss of their bank a year ago. Umpqua Bank-Newport is holding its “Thank You” picnic March 12th from 11:30am to 2:30pm, at Umpqua’s temporary bank at 141 NW 11th (1 block west of Highway 101). Drop in – the food’s on them! And maybe we’ll find out when they expect to begin building their new bank on the same site as the old one on Highway 101 between Oscar’s and McDonalds.
The fire began in an area above the south wall outside the ATM machine. Fire investigators said it was ignited by some sort of electrical failure. A nasty storm was coming ashore at the time with winds in the 50 to 60mph range which fanned the flames across the entire width and breadth of the bank. It was consumed in about 15 to 20 minutes. The fire spread so quickly that firefighters were prevented from entering the building to fight the flames. Fire officials said at the time that all they could do was hold back and throw as much water on the blaze as they could to keep it from sending chunks of burning material north into McDonalds and other buildings.
Umpqua Bank has been finalizing their plans for their new bank. City officials say it appears they’re getting close to getting that done and to come in and get their building permit.
