Prior to going on an extended research mission off the coast of Alaska, the R/V Oceanus headed out this morning from HMSC on a sea trial to make sure everything was working on board okay. Just past the Yaquina Bay Bridge something malfunctioned. Something about a turbo filter screen.
The Coast Guard vessel Victor and a 46′ motor lifeboat got a line on the Oceanus and towed her out past the jaws – got her turned around, and headed back toward the bay. Once inside, the Oceanus found a little bit of power to motor upstream, turned around next to the International Terminal, and threw out an anchor. Chit chat back and forth between the Oceanus and the Coast Guard indicated that repairs won’t take long and that the crew aboard the Oceanus expects to be back to their sea trials shortly.
