City officials say that the Newport Pool is in bad shape when it comes to the “underneath” plumbing. However, Public Works Director Tim Gross says it appears that they can dig under the pool and create a new drainage system that won’t leak and will give the pool a few more more years of life. But the long term prognosis is…there’s not many years left in the old girl.
The pool was built nearly 50 years ago and the materials, piping, seals and all the rest were never intended to last much longer than a few decades. Hence, the pool has done well for itself but there are absolute limits.
Gross says it will take at least two weeks to get the new drain system installed along with other maintenance that needs to be done on other aspects of the pool which, he says, will probably mean a full month of work.
In the meantime, the Toledo and Lincoln City pools are still honoring Newport Pool pass holders. In the past, temporary outages have lasted a few days. We’ll see if their generosity holds up for a few weeks.
