Newport Parks and Recreation Department Director Jim Protiva said they are about done draining the Newport Pool so they can continue tracking down why it’s leaking. The pool sprung a big leak about a week ago, which flooded the basement area, submerging chemicals, pumps and electrical circuits. But they all seemed to have survived the ordeal and without polluting the environment.
They started filling the pool earlier in the week thinking they may have fixed the leak with a back up plan on a drain valve. But when the pool approached the “full” line, it started leaking again. This time Protiva and Public Works Director Tim Gross say, they fear it might be a leak within an interior pipe. So they started draining the pool again. It should be empty again by tonight.
On Friday, they hope to insert a surveillance camera into various pipes to see if they can find where the leak or leaks are. They, like everyone else, is hoping it’ll be an easy fix. But it may not be. They say they’ll know a lot more sometime Friday.
Meanwhile, pool pass holders can swim at the Toledo and Lincoln City pools if they like. They’re honoring Newport pass holders so there is no charge to use their pools. But check their schedules, of course, so when you arrive, you’ll know what’s going on.
