Newport Pool Update: It may be more complicated than they thought – Pool closed ’til further notice again

Pool is being pumped dry again.
Should be dry and ready for more thorough
repair assessment on Thursday.

Just when the city was starting to feel relief that the municipal might re-open this weekend, the picture darkened again on Thursday. After re-filling the pool and planning to re-heat the water in anticipation for a Saturday re-opening, crews found the basement floor with an inch of water on it. It meant the pool was leaking again.
Newport Public Works Director Tim Gross said it was a disappointment and that diagnosing the problem will take more work. He said there is a labyrinth of pipes under the pool, one of which might be leaking. He said his department will slip a plumbing TV surveillance camera down the pipes until they find where any of them are losing water to the outside. Then they’ll try to figure out what it will take to fix it.
Bottom line: The pool is back to being closed until further notice.
The Newport Pool was built in 1964, the year Lyndon Johnson was elected President soon after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.
Municipal Pools in Toledo and Lincoln City are accepting Newport swimmers free of charge who are paid up at the Newport Pool.
