Newport: Traffic Crash at 101 and 20th – bad back up headed south – traffic being diverted at Walmart

Traffic Crash 101 at NW 20th, Newport
Monday afternoon
4:08pm
A high speed rear-ender accident shut down Highway 101 at NW 20th (Fred Meyer) Monday afternoon. The accident occurred at the signal light, with a car coming up from behind plowing into a pickup which pushed into a small car in front of it which was stopped at the light. The errant motorist, Luella Koerper, 83, Newport, driving a Honda CRV was transported to the hospital. Occupants of two other vehicles were also transported to the hospital.
It appeared that the Honda hit the rear end of the pickup at a fairly good clip causing not only major damage to all three vehicles but injuries as well, with several victims walking around with what appeared to be very sore necks. Both front airbags in the Honda deployed. Police say Koerper was cited for failing to obey a traffic light.
