Pelican down time in Yachats – waiting for the storm to pass…

With our recent bumpy offshore weather, and rather frothy surflines, a number of Central Coast seabirds figured it was time to take a break and find some nice soft grass to land on in Yachats and wait the storm out. Fortunately for us, photographer Sharon Sumerau positioned herself in the right place at the right time to gauge the general social climate between these brown pelicans and their somewhat less elegant seagull brethren. All seemed content to enjoy the opportunity to relax and wait out Mother Nature’s sea-going temper-tantrum just over their shoulders until one of the pelicans figured the seagulls were making things a little too crowded. A flap of a wing or two and the seagulls yielded some territory much to the satisfaction of both pelicans.
