Story from Newport Police
Newport Police Officers were dispatched this week to a disturbance at 520 SW 2nd Street in Newport. It was reported by resident Jan Johnson, age 72 of Newport, that a subject outside the residence was banging on the windows and doors in an attempt to enter the home. She told Dispatch that her husband, Keith Johnson, age 68 of Newport, had gone outside to confront the subject. As officers arrived on scene they encountered Janette McBride, age 38 of Newport, walking away from the residence. McBride was detained. During their investigation Officers were told by McBride that she had attempted to enter the residence by breaking the front window with a metal garden hose nozzle, and by kicking out the window. McBride told officers she needed a place to stay and thought the residence was vacant. She was arrested and lodged in the Lincoln County Jail on charges of Attempted Burglary in the First Degree, Criminal Mischief in the 2nd Degree, and Criminal Mischief in the 3rd Degree. Her bail was set at $122,500.00. Mr. and Mrs. Johnson were not harmed in this incident.
