Local law enforcement on the look out for known burglars and drug runners spotted them both together at a location Wednesday afternoon in Newport off Eads Street. Officers swooped in and captured one male suspect as he jumped from a reddish Dodge Nitro SUV but two inside managed to roar off down the road. Newport Police were hot after them.
The chase ran up Highway 20 during which the Nitro ran a small car off the road. Fortunately no injuries. The chase continued for 9 miles, reports indicating that speeds of 80 to 100 mph was about average. As the Nitro roared up Pioneer Mountain it tried to hang a quick left onto Pioneer Mountain Loop Road. The vehicle couldn’t make the curve due to speed and smacked head-on into the guard rail, which miraculously prevented them from going over 25 to 40 foot plunge through trees and into a creek. The two people jumped out the the Nitro and tried to make a break for it.
The male occupant was confronted by officers, and briefly scuffled with them, but was subdued. Police say driver Amanda Brown, 26 of Dallas fled down hill into a creek. She was quickly captured. It was later determined Brown was wanted for parole violation out of Polk County. The male was identified as Jared Dunmire, 27, of Newport, wanted for burglary and theft.
Brown was transported to PCH in Newport where she was evaluated for claimed injuries but later released to officers who transported her to the county jail. Dunmire was transported to PCH by sheriff’s patrol car, evaluated and later booked into the county jail.
The male who jumped out of Brown’s vehicle back in Newport was detained for a while, questioned and then released.
Anyone with information on Amanda Brown or Jared Dunmire are asked to call Newport Police Officers Purdom or Auborn at 541-574-3348.
The investigation is being handled by Lincoln County’s inter-agency crime fighting team, LINT which uses officers from OSP and Lincoln County area law enforcement agencies to better track criminal behavior by taking a regional approach to investigating crime and linking suspects together as they ply their criminal trade over a wide area.
