Newport’s salvaged piece of last summer’s Japanese Tsunami Dock will arrive at Hatfield Marine Science Center Wednesday morning after 10am. The 14′ x 14′ piece that was carved out of a larger piece will become part of a permanent memorial to the many Japanese men, women and children who perished during the March 11, 2011 earthquake and tsunami that ravaged the east coast of Honshu.
Axis Crane worked with other crews last summer at Agate Beach in chopping up the dock and hauling it to their facility to be converted into road and highway material. Axis will haul a piece of the dock, a part of the end piece pictured above, to the Hatfield Marine Science Center where it will eventually be included in the memorial.
The Yaquina Bay Bridge has a 50 ton weight limit so traffic on the bridge will be cleared so that the dock piece will have the span all to itself.
Exactly how the piece will be incorporated into the memorial or when it will be completed has not been announced. The city council might comment on that tonight during their regular council meeting.
