All’s well that ends well, even if it did get a little scary for two surfers this morning off Newport’s south jetty. Four local surfers were trying to catch some big surf breaking off the south jetty. Two of them were caught in rip currents that nearly wore them out trying to paddle free of them. The Coast Guard immediately dispatched two motor lifeboats to look for them.
There is a NOAA warning about large Japanese swells coming in at an odd angle along the Oregon Coast which may have contributed to the erratic rip currents the two surfers said they were dealing with.
Both managed to break free. The second one (pictured) actually climbed up on the jetty and walked back to the beach. He said he was fine and lives in South Beach.
