Outgoing Police Chief Steve Bechart was appointed Chief of Police in 2006 after having retired from 28 years in the Portland Police Bureau. Chief Bechart said he took on the additional assignment because, at the time, he wasn’t ready yet for retirement. He told News Lincoln County Friday that he may still not be ready for retirement but he’s got time to think about it. He said he doesn’t rule out more leisurely paced consulting work or other professional opportunities.
