Lincoln City selects new Police Chief

Keith Kilian named Chief of Police, Lincoln City, Oregon

Keith Kilian has been appointed as the new Lincoln City Chief of Police by City Manager David
Hawker. Mr. Kilian will start his new position on January 22nd.

Mr. Kilian was chosen for the position after a comprehensive selection process. The process included written testing, multiple interviews with sworn and civilian panels, and a thorough background check. “We are looking forward to welcoming Keith Kilian as our new Chief of Police” said David Hawker, City Manager. “Keith’s experience and professional background made him the best candidate for this position.”

Kilian will be relocating to Lincoln City from Vancouver, Washington. He grew up in the Portland metro area and has been employed by the Clark County Sheriff’s Office since 1978. Kilian served as a Clark County Deputy from 1978 until 1989, handling patrol, narcotics and investigative duties. In 1989, he was promoted to Sergeant, supervising patrol squads and internal affairs and working as a public information officer. After being promoted to Commander in 2001, Kilian served as the Commander of the Clark-Skamania Drug Task Force. Kilian also served as Administrative Commander of the Clark County Sheriff’s Office in 2006, where he administered policies and procedures and supervised the Internal Affairs unit. From 2009 until the present day, Kilian was assigned to the Sheriff’s Office West Precinct, where he supervised Patrol Operations in a service area of 109 square miles with a population of over 80,000.

Kilian has been married to Renee, his wife of 28 years and they have three adult children. Kilian has an AA in Criminal Justice, a BS in Administration of Justice and is a graduate of the FBI National Academy. “I am honored to have been selected as the next Chief of Police for the City of Lincoln City” said Keith Kilian. “In exploring this opportunity, I was very impressed with the professionalism of the Police Department, city officials, and their relationship with the community. I am very excited and look forward to becoming a part of the leadership team of the City and a member of this community.”

Kilian’s swearing in will take place at City Hall in the Council Chambers on Friday January 25, 2013 at 9 a.m. Members of the public are welcome to attend.

Outgoing Police Chief Steve Bechart was appointed Chief of Police in 2006 after having retired from 28 years in the Portland Police Bureau. Chief Bechart said he took on the additional assignment because, at the time, he wasn’t ready yet for retirement. He told News Lincoln County Friday that he may still not be ready for retirement but he’s got time to think about it. He said he doesn’t rule out more leisurely paced consulting work or other professional opportunities.
