It’s New Year’s Eve and Newport has already had its first early evening crash – 6th and Nye during the 4 o’clock hour. Lady in the Jeep SUV said she stopped northbound at the stop sign but didn’t see the small subcompact Chevy coming from the east. They came together in the middle of the intersection. Luckily nobody was hurt. Major damage to both vehicles. NO ALCOHOL INVOLVED.
A resident who lives on the corner said 6th and Nye is notorious for accidents and that “We were way overdue for one. This doesn’t surprise me.” There are north-south stop signs at Nye and 6th with through traffic for 6th street motorists.
Let’s hope this is not an omen for how New Year’s Night will go. If you plan to party, have a designated driver picked out ahead of time. If you’ve had one or five too many, call a cab. It’s a heck of a lot cheaper than killer fines, higher insurance, any medical bills and all the grief and agony that goes with getting busted for drunk driving. IT…..JUST…..ISN’T…..WORTH…..IT. PERIOD.
