In honor of Toledo’s First Weekend theme for January, “Black and White,” five women are joining together for a group show that will showcase the wide range of fine artwork that is being created in Toledo. Caroll Loomis, Becky Miller, Alice Haga, Karen Fitzgibbon (Fikaa Designs), and Sarah Gayle (SolaLuna Studios) will each be displaying several primarily black and white pieces created especially for this two-day show, to be held at Becky Miller Studio, 167 NE 1st St. in the Toledo Arts District.
The group first began to formulate the idea last year when they took a girls trip together to Sisters to see an art show there. “We all felt so inspired by bouncing ideas off each other that we didn’t want the fun to end when we got home,” said Becky. “Caroll and I had talked at one time about doing a black and white show when we both were artists-in-residence at Skybound Art Gallery on Main Street. The idea came up again when the theme was set for First Weekend in January, and we all decided it would be a great opportunity for our first group show.”
Becky, who primarily is an oil painter, will be showing pen and ink drawings, black and white watercolors, and pencil drawings. Caroll has created black and white gourds and several sets of hand-painted black and white earrings. Alice has a created beautiful black and white dishes and masks. Sarah will be showing a pen and ink drawing and Karen has designed several unique mixed media pieces. The group is also preparing black and white refreshments.
The women intend to show together often. The next group show they are planning will be held in May, when the First Weekend theme is “It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad May.” “Our interpretation of the theme will be ‘Mad Hatter,’” said Becky. “Both Alice and Sarah have years of theatrical costume-design experience, Karen’s work is wonderfully theatrical and colorful in nature, and Caroll’s work is always playful and unique. Without a doubt, the May show is also going to be an absolute blast.”
The Black and White show will be open from 11 am to 5 pm Saturday and Sunday, January 5 and 6.
