Morning police foot pursuit in Newport
3rd and Nye, Newport
Friday morning
Newport Police were called to a report Friday morning of a verbal dispute near the Pinewood Apartments at 6th and Nye. A witness said the two males were about to come to blows. Arriving police prompted one man to take off running south on Nye, heading for heavy trees and brush off the west side of the road. However, police officers were able to catch him. They cuffed him and detained him in the back of a patrol car.
Police say they asked Earl Reed why he ran. He said he thought police had a warrant for his arrest. A check was made with records and Reed came back “no warrant.” However, since they found a meth pipe on him, that changed the whole situation. Reed was on probation on an earlier drug conviction. When his probation officer found out he possessed a meth pipe, he ordered Reed to be taken the two blocks to the county jail and booked for violation of his probation.
