Joshua Cherry, 21
The Yaquina Bay Bridge was blocked by a multi-vehicle crash just south of the main span at around 2:30pm Saturday afternoon. The crash was precipitated by a police pursuit of a suspect wanted for multiple vehicle burglaries in Wagoner, Oklahoma.
Officers were tipped off that Joshua Cherry was in Newport staying with one of two women he’s known to stay with, one of which has a child by him. Officers spotted his Chevrolet compact at the south Chevron Mini-Mart. As the officer approached the vehicle he ordered Cherry out of the car. Cherry denied his identity, but as the officer pressed him, he took off southbound on 101 and headed over the bridge with the officer in pursuit. Officers say Cherry rear-ended one car mid-span then veered into the oncoming lane and hit two other cars before coming to a stop.
Officers say Cherry jumped out of the car and started running southbound. The officers outran him and took him down and cuffed him, later transporting him to the county jail. He’s being held on the Oklahoma warrant containing three charges of vehicle burglaries and theft. In addition, he’s expected to be booked here in Newport at the county jail on additional charges of Attempt to Elude Officers, Reckless Driving and Reckless Endangerment to others.
As you can see from the photos, the incident tied up traffic north and southbound through Newport, the northern back-up extending as far north as Newport City Hall. Motorists hit by Cherry were out of their vehicles, going through their registrations and giving the information to police officers.
At least one person was seen being loaded into an ambulance with what were thought to be minor injuries.
