Logging roads: How to build them, where to build them. The issue is on its way to the U.S. Supreme Court
Is storm water run-off from logging roads the same as water off a farm or is it like wastewater from a factory pipe? For years environmentalists have contended that it is clearly polluted water from a pipe, filled with mud and other debris that degrade local rivers and streams to the detriment of spawning salmon and other fish. The timber industry disagrees. So the case is now on its way to the U.S. Supreme Court.
The timber industry and the Federal Environmental Protection Agency both contend they’re devising new regulations to improve the situation in the woods but a northwest environmental defense group says it’ll be too little – that the real answer is to revamp the way logging roads are routed in the woods.
