A Newport Police Sergeant, responding to a call about a possible suicidal person at a motel at 7th and Highway 101, inadvertently interrupted what was described as a drug party going on inside one of the rooms. When the door opened the officer saw a group of people doing meth and heroin, some of which scrambled except for one who jumped up and began fighting. The sergeant fought with the man into the bathroom where the man was subdued with a combination of a taser and pepper spray.
Numerous Newport Police and Sheriff’s Deputies converged on the scene and helped the sergeant sort things out and keep a lid on things. The fighter, identified as Eric Dennen, was taken to PCH for an evaluation, and was then expected to be transported to the county jail.
Drennen was booked into the county jail on charges of two counts of assaulting an officer, one count of resisting arrest, possession of methamphetamine, tampering with evidence and criminal mischief. Drennen’s bail wasset at $230,000.
