Teens with “destructive device” arrested on 101 just north of Coos Bay

From Oregon State Police

Oregon State Police (OSP) Hazardous Device Technicians disarmed a destructive device Sunday after it was discovered inside a pickup occupied by four juveniles during an early morning traffic stop along Highway 101 north of Coos Bay. One juvenile was transported to the Douglas County Juvenile Detention Center and three others were cited in connection with the incident.

An OSP senior trooper stopped a 1991 Toyota pickup for a speed violation on Highway 101 near milepost 232 in the wee hours of Sunday morning. The vehicle was driven by a 17-year old male with three juvenile passengers, one male and two females, all from North Bend. The trooper discovered alcohol inside the pickup and a small destructive device in the glove box. The pickup was towed to a secondary location where it was secured.

Later that day, OSP Hazardous Device Technicians (HDT) responded and rendered the device safe. Per standard release protocol requested by HDT troopers, a description of the device will not be released.

The pickup’s driver was lodged at the Douglas County Juvenile Detention Center for Unlawful Possession of a Destructive Device, Unlawful Manufacture of a Destructive Device, and 3 counts of Furnishing Alcohol to a Minor.

The three passengers were cited for Minor in Possession of Alcohol and released to a family member.
