Correction for the Candidates: The candidates say Lincoln County’s High School Graduation rate is only 2/3. They are in error, according to Lincoln County Schools Superintendent Tom Rinearson. He says Lincoln County High School graduation rates are: Taft High: Over 98%, Toledo High: Over 94%, Newport and Waldport High School between those two figures.
What the candidates were referring to was a state education department report that refers to distinct classes, starting with a particular 9th grade class moving through. Rinearson says the state education department perspective was misinterpreted to say that 1/3 of Oregon’s children don’t finish high school. What is true is that 1/3 of Oregon students don’t graduate on the same day as most of their original 9th grade classmates. Many students that don’t graduate with their original 9th grade class enroll in adult education, get their GED, etc. But they do graduate.
