Candidate’s Statement: Sandra Roumagoux for Mayor of Newport
As Mayor of Newport I will be a dedicated and pragmatic leader who will encourage job growth and preserve the quality of life in the local area. I will work hard to support economic diversification and partnerships that will benefit not only the city, but also the port, the Hatfield Marine Science Center, The Oregon Coast Community College, the fishing industry, as well as the many small businesses.
In my long career as a professional artist and in public service, I have been effective in building consensus, sharing information, finding ways to keep everyone in the loop and allowing creativity and innovation to grow. I enjoy working cooperatively with others to make sure that important tasks are realized.
I will use my experience as a Newport City Councilor to continue making our community’s best interests a focal point. During these past two years, the City has become financially solvent with a re-established contingency fund. The old collapsing water and sewer infrastructure is being addressed by the Public Works Department, and fInancial accountability has been factored in.
A Strategic Plan for Economic Development specifically for Newport has been completed. Within this plan there is emphasis to help facilitate growth in the marine and ocean observing research and education, as well as retention of the fishing fleet. This plan also spells out the importance of Newport as a regional center of activity on the Central Oregon Coast.
Newport is growing and on the move. I, with your support, look forward as your next mayor to be a part of these exciting times.
