LC Child Advocacy Center doubles down on preventing child sexual abuse.

Brenda Coleman
Outreach Coordinator to prevent Child Sexual Abuse in Lincoln County

Community-Focused Child Abuse Prevention Program

The Children’s Advocacy Center of Lincoln County is launching a Community-Focused Child Abuse Prevention initiative to create a comprehensive and effective community-wide effort toward the prevention of child sexual abuse. In this community initiative, Lincoln County adults will take an active part in building awareness of abuse and learning how to protect our children from abuse. The program will be utilizing the evidence-based Darkness to Light Stewards of Children training program. Funding for the initiative has come from the Siletz Tribal Charitable Contribution Fund and The Ford Family Foundation.

Motivational and compelling, Stewards of Children calls participants into personal responsibility for the safety of children as well as incorporates the mechanics necessary in creating organizational policies and procedures that keep children safe. It is an ideal training for parents and organizations and individuals that serve children and youth.

Eight facilitators from the community have been trained to carry out Stewards of Children training. The goal is to train 5% of the adults in Lincoln County over the next three years. As part of the initiative the Center has collaborated with the Coastal Families Together Parenting Education Hub project that is incorporating Stewards of Children into their curriculum.

The Children’s Advocacy Center is pleased to announce the appointment of Brenda Coleman into the Outreach Coordinator role. Brenda will be coordinating this child abuse prevention initiative.

She brings a wealth of experience to this position. Currently a substitute teacher in the Corvallis and Philomath School districts, Brenda also serves as the back-up forensic interviewer at the Center. Previously, she was an instructor with the Healthy Family Project parenting classes, the Family Support and Connections Coordinator at the Old Mill Center for Children and Families, a Social Service Specialist for the Department of Human Services Child Welfare, an Adjunct Instructor in the Linn-Benton Community College Criminal Justice Department, and Community Service Counselor/Cognitive Skills Facilitator for Benton County Community Corrections. Brenda has three Bachelor of Arts degrees – Education, International Studies and Political Science, and a Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies. She enjoys traveling, outdoor sports and music. Fluent in Spanish, she will be facilitating Stewards of Children outreach training within the Spanish-speaking community.
