Provided by Siuslaw National Forest
Fall brings the promise of cooler nights and the coming winter, and for many, the need to collect firewood to heat their homes. To help meet that need, firewood permits are now for sale at Siuslaw National Forest offices according to forest officials.
“We offer firewood permits for both personal and commercial use because it allows us to make use of any wood left at our timber sales or hazard trees that need to be taken down for safety reasons,” said Eric Stolsig, Forest Service Representative for the Siuslaw National Forest Timber program. “The wood we sell for firewood tends to be smaller or broken chunks left behind in log decks by the loggers when they complete the sales.”
Firewood permits for personal use will remain at $10 per cord with a two cord permit minimum and a maximum of six cords per year per household. Most personal use firewood cutting areas are on log landings after commercial timber sales have occurred.
Due to current, high Fire Danger conditions, please make sure you are aware of and following fire safe practices. Coordinate with your local office to know up-to-date regulations when you plan to go out and cut firewood.
Please read the following information for specific information for the Ranger District nearest you.

The Hebo Ranger District on the Siuslaw National Forest will begin accepting requests for firewood permits starting Tuesday, October 9. A minimum purchase of 6 cords per permit is required at a rate of $20 per cord; with 30 days to gather that amount. Commercial use harvesting consists of pre-marked, standing green trees along designated roads throughout the district.
Personal use firewood cutting areas are on log landings after timber commercial sales have occurred and down trees or logs resulting from road improvements. Please note one change from last year concerning personal use permits, a purchase of 2 -3 cords will have 20 days to gather the wood and 4-6 cords; 40 days.
Firewood cutting areas have been identified on the ground and packets with location information are available for both commercial and personal use firewood and can be acquired at the Hebo District Office. As commercial timber sales conclude and road improvement projects are completed, expect additional areas to come available throughout the firewood cutting season.
