At about 12:15pm Friday, the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office Marine Patrol and Central Oregon Coast Fire Rescue responded to a report of a boating accident in the Alsea Bay in Waldport. An investigation revealed that John Vanderbeek, age 69 of Waldport, was operating a 20 foot Zodiak, which he recently repaired. Vanderbeek was test driving the boat in the Alsea Bay when the accident occurred. Witnesses reported that the boat struck its own wake and ejected Vanderbeek into the water and then circled back around under it’s own power and struck him. Vanderbeek suffered fatal injuries from the boat propeller.
Witnesses reported that Vanderbeek was not wearing a lifejacket and deputies found that the boat was not equipped with an engine shutoff tether.
