Newport Police recently received information that a convicted child sex offender from Florida had moved to Newport and that he was living with a woman and her two young girls under a fake name.
The report said Patrick Maki, 37 from extreme southeast Florida, had been convicted of sexual child abuse and that he was on parole after serving time in prison. But right after his release and registering as a sex offender, police say he left Florida without telling anyone where he was going, a violation of his parole. They said Maki traveled to Hawaii for a time, then returned to the mainland, finally settling in Newport where he worked for a while as a charter boat deck hand while living with a woman who has two little girls.
When initially confronted about who he was, Newport Police say Maki claimed to be Jared Newman. But when pressed on information police had been given about Maki, he finally admitted to who he was.
In the meantime, authorities in Monroe County report Maki has become a suspect in other sexual offenses and that additional charges against him are pending.
Maki is being held in the Lincoln County Jail on charges of failing to register as a sex offender and for giving false information to a police officer. His bail was set at $50,000.
Newport Police are calling out to the public, that if anyone knows anything about Maki, who possibly used the names of Jared Newman or Patrick McFinn, to please contact police at 541-574-3348. Ask for Officer Garrett or Detective France.
