Newport is not the only place that managed to acquire a piece of the Japanese Dock that drifted across the Pacific following the March 11, 2011 Japanese earthquake and tsunami. The dock, which washed up on Agate Beach in Newport late June 3rd – early June 4th, has yielded two tie-line posts that will be given a new home at the Oregon State Historical Museum in Portland. Only Newport has another momento which is a rather large corner piece of the dock that will be ensconced at a park near the ocean. The rest of the dock was ground up into road gravel and it’s stainless steel recycled.
