Overloaded skiff sinks, throws two men into Yaquina Bay – No lifejackets. Coast Guard got ’em in time.
Two men in what was believed to be an overloaded 15′ skiff sank in the middle of Yaquina Bay Thursday evening, between the Embarcadero Resort and the R/V Wecoma. Both men were clinging to individual tote boxes that kept them afloat. The Coast Guard said neither were wearing life jackets.
Witnesses at the Embarcadero said they watched the skiff nose down into the water, then capsize, throwing the blue totes and the men into the water which was estimated at around 58 degrees. The skiff went to the bottom of the bay but the Coast Guard says it is not a hazard to navigation.
The two men were plucked from the water and rushed back to the Coast Guard pier to an awaiting ambulance. They were checked over and were transported to PCH for a further evaluation and a little warming up.
Lesson: Know the weight limit of your craft, and always have lifejackets handy, certainly wearing them under such conditions. They were hauling ice across the bay in the totes, according to the Coast Guard.
