Newport Police say a pickup trying to merge into one lane of traffic just south of Fred Meyer got too close to one of two truck trailers full of asphalt on 101 northbound during the noon hour. The pickup’s right side was damaged and its right front wheel assembly snapped off and was shoved under the pickup. The pickup driver wasn’t hurt. He was expected to be cited for an unsafe traffic movement.
The truck driver said he was stopped in the right lane with one trailer hanging over into the left lane. He said the pickup hit the left rear trailer wheel assembly. There was little or no damage to the trailer and the driver was sent on his way so as to not spoil a fresh load of asphalt that was in danger of going bad. We’re told he was carrying about $3,000 to $5,000 worth of asphalt.
ODOT was reportedly painting a crosswalk on 101 at 21st, ahead of the crash scene, which forced northbound vehicles to temporarily squeeze down to one lane.
