Michael Gibbons, artist from Toledo, pictured with “I Made Art History” T-shirt and brush in hand, paints Saturday August 4 in the Portland Parks at the 1st Invitational Plein Air Paint Out sponsored by the Portland Art Museum. From the far left to right in the orange tee-shirt is Brian Ferriso, Director of the Museum with the Honorable Ted Kulonkgoski, Judy Gibbons and Mary Oberst, the Governor’s wife and numerous passerbys.
The shade of the trees helped keep the 36 artists in the group cool while temperatures hovered over 100 degrees in the afternoon. The following day, Sunday August 5, the artists had a showing and sale in the Museum outdoor plaza of their work done in the Saturday Paint Out. Michael Gibbons; Ivan Kelly; Marion
Moir; and Sandi Rumagoux are the four painters invited to participate from Lincoln County. The historical Plein Air movement from California produced a major show of work that was presented by the Irvine Museum at the Portland Art Museum and which sparked the adjunct Paint Out by Northwest artists of Oregon and Washington. Public reaction was extremely favorable with interest and sales of work confirming the idea that the Portland Art Museum continue to sponsor such an event.
