A man out for a little crab fishing had his plans interrupted Saturday when his dingy type craft pooped out. Engine failure. Incoming waves shoved him up against the inner wall of the north jetty. However, the fog was so thick that he couldn’t see where he was and the Coast Guard tower next to the old lighthouse couldn’t spot him either.
So, the Coast Guard launched a 46 foot motor lifeboard and gingerly worked their way up the jetty. They quickly found the stranded fisherman, brought him aboard the motor lifeboat, tied a tow-rope to the dingy, and soon boat and owner were on their way back into Newport. The Coast Guard towed the dingy over to the South Beach Marina where the dingy had apparently been launched.
The Coast Guard said there’s not much you can do about engine failure. It happens all the time. They say just make sure your engine(s) are well maintained because they are, after all, most of what separates you from an unforgiving sea.
