The Newport Airport is running a little leaner since former Airport Director Gene Cossey headed east to take a new job at a major commercial airport. With Cossey gone, the two remaining paid staff divided up Cossey’s job including their own, cross trained, and now either can run everything. As for managing pending airport improvements, they said another person with the skill set to handle the runway project, in cooperation with the Federal Aviation Administration, will keep things on schedule.
City Manager Jim Voetberg said “The whole thing is an experiment and so far it’s working well.” Voetberg added that if, for some reason, the arrangement goes haywire, the city will re-consider hiring an airport director. If the current situation hangs together, the city just might be able to save some money.
