Newport City Councilors Monday night approved a new set of incentives for drivers to pay their traffic tickets right away or face a rising amount of fines the longer they take to pay them.
Under the new plan, if you pay your ticket right away, you just pay the fine. If you elect to go on a payment plan it will cost you more. If you ticket is less than $150, a $25 payment fee will be paid as part of the installment agreement with the court. If your fine is over $150, the court will levy a 15% payment fee on any amount over $150 with a cap of $125.
If you don’t pay your ticket, your ticket goes to collection and the collection agency gets a 25% collection fee added onto the full ticket amount.
The new arrangement begins late this summer.
