City Councilor Jeff Bertulei has announced he is running for Mayor of Newport. Mayor McConnell recently announced that he and his wife are committed to having a great retirement together and that he’ll be stepping down at the end of his term this December.
Bertuleit said in his announcement that Newport has come a good ways toward fixing some long running challenges facing the city including water, streets and wastewater. He said also that the city has a ways to go to complete those tasks but that the city workforce is ready to get the job done. Bertuleit maintains that with solid and consistent city council leadership Newport will move forward in a cost effective way.
Bertuleit promised sound fiscal policies while guarding Newport’s high quality of life. He also said he will ensure sound land use planning.
Bertuleit is a multi-term city councilor who is a self-employed businessman making handcrafted airplane propellers.
City Councilor Dave Allen has mentioned in the past that he has had an interest in the mayor’s position. We thought that Mr. Allen had already announced, but he hasn’t. Mr. Allen wrote us a quick email: In regard to the above reference, I had mentioned to others on the council a while back that I’m content staying a councilor for the remainder of my term. Jeff has since filed to run for mayor, and I wish him the best of luck in the fall election.
