Newport City Manager Jim Voetberg has confirmed to the city council that he had recently traveled to Alaska to apply for a city manager job in the town of Soldotna, a town located on the north coast of the Kenai Peninsula. Voetberg was quoted as saying that he did not get the job but that he’s glad to be back home, more appreciative than ever of the community’s forward looking attitudes and goals.
Voetberg has had a mixed report card from the council the last couple of years with issues surrounding communications and transparency with the council. City workers complaints, revealed in two city worker surveys, centered on matters of trust and valuing of employee work. However, the council has said it believes there have been recent improvements in Voetberg’s performance as city manager.
Voetberg was recently given a 2% cost of living pay raise (COLA). Since he serves at the pleasure of the city council, there is no set salary for the city manager’s position, so he did not get a step-increase – an increment raise within a pay scale. His 2% COLA increase coincides with what all other city employees received.
