Newport Senior Activities Center featuring Table Tennis Member Larry Schwartz
Story from Newport Senior Activity Center
Larry Schwartz is a very highly rated table tennis player and Newport’s Senior Activity Center is lucky to have him as a regular asset for those who want to learn the game or sharpen their skills. Larry is an active member of the NSAC’s table tennis group that meets each Wednesday & Saturday at Yaquina Bay School from 5:30-8:30 PM. He recently participated in the Oregon State Games in table tennis and represented the Newport 60+ center table tennis club. Larry has been playing table tennis for over 40 years and is soon to turn 80 years old. He is an experienced player who began the sport while working at the VA medical center as a psychologist, playing table tennis there for over 30 years.
“Right now I’m playing the best of my life,” Schwartz says. “Table tennis gives you a great upper body workout and improves your hand and eye coordination.” During doubles competition they match players with a higher rating. For example, players rated 700 are paired with a 1300 rated partner. “It’s a great way to improve your skills and learn some new tricks.”
The Newport club is very active with 10 players, welcoming any to have some fun while getting a good workout, each Wednesday & Saturday from 5:30-8:30 PM at the old Yaquina Bay School gym.
