The libraries in Lincoln City, Newport and Waldport Dream Big, READ! this week by playing Book Bingo on Wednesday, July 25. All children and families are invited to attend one of these free programs.
Wednesday, July 25, Book Bingo will be played at Waldport Public Library (10 a.m.), Newport Public Library (1 p.m.), and Driftwood Public Library in Lincoln City (6:30 p.m.).
“Book Bingo is something we did every summer for many years,” says Rebecca Cohen, Children’s Librarian at Newport Library. “But by 2008 we had so many children attending our summer programs that we could no longer fit inside the library’s McEntee meeting room. When the Newport Rotary Club built Literacy Park, we had room for all the children but I couldn’t figure out how to play bingo in the outdoor amphitheater. Fortunately, I don’t work alone and my esteemed colleague, Jan Eastman, figured out how to use stamps for bingo instead of beans or chips. So, finally, we are back in the Book Bingo business!”
Book Bingo is played using the covers of children’s books instead of numbers in the columns headed R E A D S. When a child has a bingo, they get to select a book from among the many that have been donated to the library throughout the year.
