Newport Master Gardener Liz Olsen and two of her apprentices Friday afternoon launched what they called a “mini-harvest” atop the hill behind the original Yaquina Bay Lighthouse. It’s an OSU Extension Master Gardener project that makes fresh vegetables available to local food banks. Today’s harvest was among the first this year, which was mostly chard, beets, turnips and assorted lettuces.
Today’s harvest was cleaned, and spun dry in a couple of salad spinners and bagged up and delivered to the Newport Food Pantry.
Next mini-harvest is coming up next week, more than likely! Olsen urges anyone with a home garden that has some surplus to please think about taking it to their local food pantry. For a complete list of local food pantries, click here.
