It all started during the noon hour when a couple entered the ME Fitness Center on SW 10th in Newport. A center employee witnessed Jeff Codwallader and Chrystal Wright of Salem head out the door with an absconded gym bag. He watched them jump into a Saturn 4-door sedan and take off. The employee called Newport Police who soon found the car and confronted the couple. Offices quickly apprehended the gym bag as well as its contents.
The officers ran a warrants check on the two. Codwallader had an active parole violation for his arrest so they added that onto a charge of theft associated with the gym bag.
At that point Wright began complaining of chest pains. An ambulance was summoned and she was transported to PCH. But on arrival, Wright pushed past a paramedic and took off running down the street. Her description went out over the police radio and an alert officer spotted Wright ducking inside a restaurant at 101 and Fall. Officers went inside and soon had her in handcuffs.
During her booking at the Lincoln County Jail for the theft of the aforementioned gym bag, it was determined that she was pretending to be someone she wasn’t. Officers determined that Wright held identification belonging to someone else in an attempt to hider her true identity. So in addition to theft, Chrystal Wright was also booked for identity theft, giving false information to a police officer and felony driving on a suspended or revoked license. A routine background check on Wright also revealed that she had three felony warrants for her arrest for parole violation, felon in possession of a firearm, and other violations.
Both Codwallader and Wright are being held in the Lincoln County Jail without bail.
