Newport Senior Activity Center is pleased to offer Chair Yoga with Sally Cheney prior to her Gentle Yoga class, every Friday, from 11:45-12:45, with Gentle Yoga continuing from 1-2:15 following Chair Yoga.
Sally Cheney is one of our talented and generous volunteers of her many years of experience in teaching yoga. This married mother of 6 and grandmother of 14 has a strong background in dance aerobics, therapeutic exercise for the developmentally disabled, and is a certified Kripalu Yoga Teacher since 1992, from the Kripula Center for Yoga and Health in Lenox, Massachusetts.
Chair Yoga accommodates persons who can’t get up and down easily from the floor. This style of yoga can be a very complete workout that increases flexibility and strength, while incorporating breathing techniques that are either energizing or calming.
Sally also emphasizes the “inner work” of yoga, from calming breathing techniques for relieving stress, to self-study and moment-to-moment awareness of one’s thoughts and feelings. This non-competitive exercise is very personal, encouraging enjoying a more fully-lived life.
As to volunteering at the NSAC, Sally is truthful about wondering what it would be like, as she is used to being paid all these years. She says, “I’m finding that the satisfaction and sense of fulfillment is still there as much as ever. Being able to offer people quality yoga at a beautiful facility like the Newport Senior Activity Center, and seeing the changes that creates in their lives gives me so much happiness—and that’s a big part of my personal yoga practice.”
