Fatal crash on Highway 20 just west of Blodgett Wednesday afternoon kills Monmouth woman – injures Toledo toddlers
Benton County Sheriff’s Deputies say a Monmouth woman was killed in a head-on crash on Highway 20, just west of Blodgett Road Wednesday afternoon.
Deputies say that a Toyota 4-Runner was driving westbound on Highway 20 at around 4pm Wednesday when it collided head-on into a Lincoln Towncar headed east. Deputies say Toyota driver Austin Wells of Monmouth may have fallen asleep at the wheel suddenly awakened to find himself in the opposite lane. He jerked his wheel back into the right lane, but driver of the oncoming Town Car had already swerved into the other lane to avoid a collision, and the vehicles hit head-on.
Killed was Katherine Wells, 52, of Monmouth who was in the Toyota. Others in the Toyota were Toby Hibbs, 4, and Kaylee Hibbs, 2, both of Toledo. Wells and the toddlers were rushed to the regional trauma center in Corvallis for evaluation and treatment of injuries. Driver of the Lincoln, Glenn Utterbeck, 53, of Jefferson, was also transported.
Deputies report there didn’t appear to be any alcohol or drugs involved.
Benton County deputies are asking that anyone who witnessed the accident to call them at 541-766-6858.
